On Sunday, July 27th, I am cycling in the Capilano Volkswagen Cypress Challenge raising awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research and care at the BC Cancer Clinic.
In addition to the many thousands of people in British Columbia diagnosed with various forms of cancer, (3 of my 4 sisters, my mother-in-law and many friends among them), more than 800 British Columbians will be diagnosed this year with pancreatic cancer. Its projected that only 10 per cent (or 80 of those people diagnosed) will live five years. This was true for wonderful and vibrant neighbour of mine who passed away last year far too young and within 2 years of her diagnosis.
Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect at an early stage and is often resistant to treatment. Although it is the tenth most common cancer in Canada, it is the fourth leading cause of cancer death. Unless more effective treatment strategies are found, pancreatic cancer in Canada is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer death by 2030. A close friend of my son's is part of a research team at the BC Cancer Clinic searching and testing better treatment methods for pancreatic cancer. This work will advance treatment of other forms of cancer as well.
