Cypress ChallengeThe Details

The climb up Cypress Mountain is one of the most popular bike climbs in Vancouver. The route on event day is a total distance of 12km uphill with a 723m elevation gain and an average grade of 5.9%. The start line begins on Cypress Bowl Road, Gate 6 — shortly after the turnoff for Mulgrave School and finishes at the Hollyburn Nordic Area.

Parking at the base of Cypress Mountain is limited so if you drive, here are some options:

  • Mulgrave School: Here’s where it all starts. Event day registration and package pick-up as well as participant drop-off is all here. There is parking available on site but it too is limited.
  • High View Lookout: This is another parking option with space available across the street. Park here, and take the short 5km bike ride down Cypress Bowl Road to the start line. (It’s all downhill!).
  • Hollyburn Nordic Area: You can park just beyond the finish line and warm-up with a 12km coast downhill to Mulgrave School.

Bag check will be available, with items shuttled to the finish line area for pick-up during the finish line celebration reception.

There will be a temporary closure of one lane of the westbound traffic on Cypress Bowl Road from 8:50am-9:10am to allow participants to stage for the start of the ride. The road will remain open in both directions throughout this lane closure. If you have family or friends driving up the mountain, please encourage them to leave plenty of time to make it through ahead of the ride start. The ride begins on Cypress Bowl Road, Gate 6, shortly after the turnoff for Mulgrave School.

Start time for all participants is 9:00 a.m. The start will be a self-seeded, neutral roll-out. Please seed yourself appropriately for the safety of all riders. The categories will be clearly marked by the time in which you expect to complete the ride: under 45 minutes, 45-60 minutes, over 60 minutes.

Join us at the finish line for music, snacks and goodies thanks to our incredible supporting partners. We’ll be joined by representatives from the community for presentations and fundraising totals that will start at around 10:15 am.

  • Make sure your bike is in good operating condition, including tires, brakes and gearing.
  • Wear a helmet and carry a patch kit, tire levers, a spare tube and a pump at all times.
  • Know and obey all traffic signals, signs, markings, laws and regulations.
  • Always ride predictably and in control. Ride in a straight line and consciously try to avoid excessive weaving back and forth. In most vehicle-bicycle accidents, motorists say they never saw the bicyclists or didn’t see them in time to avoid the collision.
  • Always use hand signals to indicate when overtaking another rider. You should always overtake on the left.
  • Move completely off the road to rest or make repairs.

Whether you’re a cyclist or a driver, we all have a role to play in sharing the road responsibly. Learn more by visiting GoByBike BC.
